Es gibt Weine, die eine Region repräsentieren. Und es gibt Weine, die ein ganzes Land auf die internationale Bühne bringen. Der Château Longyu L 12 gehört zweifellos zur zweiten Kategorie. Dieser Rotewein aus Ningxia gilt heute als das Flaggschiff des modernen chinesischen Weinbaus. Einer der spannendsten Herausforderer der großen internationalen Kultweine ist er ebenfalls. 
Following its widely noted presentation at Wine Paris – where Changyu CEO Mr. Sun Jian presented a six-liter bottle to French President Emmanuel Macron – the wine is once again generating discussion.
Macron expressed his admiration for the quality of Chinese wines and emphasized that China today plays a serious role in the global wine world. At the center of this development stands the L12. As the flagship of Château Longyu Estate, it embodies the ambition to position Chinese wine alongside the world’s greatest icons. And how successfully it does so.
Nach seiner vielbeachteten Präsentation auf der Wine Paris, sorgt der Wein erneut für Gesprächsstoff.
Die Qualität chinesischer Weine muss man Ernst nehmen, China will in Zukunft eine ernstzunehmende Rolle in der internationalen Weinwelt spielen.
Der L12 steht dabei im Zentrum dieser Entwicklung. Als Flaggschiff des Château Longyu Estate verkörpert er den Anspruch, Wein auf Augenhöhe mit den großen Ikonen der Welt zu positionieren. Aber wie!
Überzeugt bei Blindverkostungen
Dass dieser Anspruch mehr ist als eine ambitionierte Vision, zeigt sich immer wieder bei Blindverkostungen.
So wurde der L 12 2021 im Vorjahr im Rahmen eines hochkarätigen Panels der internationalen Fachzeitschrift „The Drinks Business“ gemeinsam verkostet mit Weinen wie:
- Château Lafite Rothschild 2021
- Penfolds Grange 2020
- Opus One 2021
Das Ergebnis sorgte für Aufsehen:
Der Wein erhielt die gleiche Punktebewertung wie Château Lafite Rothschild.
Ein bemerkenswertes Signal für die internationale Weinszene.
„Der L12 ist der Star eines jeden Blind Tastings“, sagt Lenz Maria Moser, der seit zwei Jahrzehnten als Brückenbauer zwischen China und Europa tätig ist. Er ist maßgeblich an der Entwicklung des Projekts beteiligt.
„Viele Verkoster erwarten einen klassischen Bordeaux – und sind dann überrascht, wenn sie erfahren, dass dieser Wein aus Ningxia stammt.“
Auch Heinz Velich, einer der renommiertesten Winzer Österreichs, zeigte sich nach einer Blindverkostung beeindruckt:
„Dieser Wein beweist: China ist bereits so gut wie die Spitze der Welt.“
Stefan Neumann, Master Sommelier mit Sitz in London und seit mehr als 15 Jahren für einige der besten und renommiertesten Restaurants und Hotels tätig, ist ebenfalls beeindruckt:
„Raffiniert und präzise, von großer Eleganz und ein eindrucksvoller Beweis dafür, wie ernsthaft Ningxia große Rotweine hervorbringen kann. Ein Wein, der es zweifellos verdient, in einem Atemzug mit den besten Rotweinen der Welt genannt zu werden.“
Cees van Casteren, holländischer Master of Wine:
„Chateau Changyu Moser XV Longyu L 12 veranschaulicht vielleicht am eindrucksvollsten den enormen Entwicklungssprung, den die chinesische Weinproduktion innerhalb weniger Jahrzehnte gemacht hat. Eine Cuvée aus den besten Parzellen von Cabernet Sauvignon aus Ningxia, überzeugt mit seiner lebendigen Frucht und charakteristischer Mineralität.“
Ningxia – das neue Terroir großer Rotweine
Der L 12 entsteht im Château Longyu Estate in der Weinregion Ningxia, am Fuß der Helan Mountains auf rund 1.100 Metern Seehöhe.
Das trockene Wüstenklima, große Temperaturunterschiede zwischen Tag und Nacht sowie karge Böden aus Schlick, Sand, Lehm und Flussgeröll sorgen für besonders kleine, aromatisch konzentrierte Cabernet-Sauvignon-Beeren.
Klein bedeutet in Zahlen: Während „normale“ Beeren gut 1,6 Gramm auf die Waage bringen, sind jene in Ningxia mit maximal einem Gramm echte Leichtgewichte.
Aber mit voller Power.
Moser: „Die Beeren sind extrem klein und konzentriert – sie bringen eine enorme Dichte und zugleich eine erstaunliche Eleganz hervor.“
Die Cuvée besteht aus:
- 94 % Cabernet Sauvignon
- 6 % Marselan
Die Trauben werden von Hand in kleinen 20-Kilogramm-Boxen gelesen und nach temperaturkontrollierter Gärung bei 25 bis 30 °C vinifiziert.
Anschließend reift der Wein 24 Monate in neuen französischen Barriques, was ihm Tiefe, Struktur und ein großes Lagerpotenzial verleiht.
Ein Stil, der überrascht
Im Glas präsentiert sich der L12 in tiefem Rubinrot mit violetten Reflexen.
Das Bouquet ist vielschichtig und komplex:
Cassis, Kirschen, Pflaumen und Himbeeren verbinden sich hier mit Mokka, Gewürzen, Tabak, Vanille und feinem Zedernholz.
Am Gaumen zeigt sich der Wein zugleich kraftvoll und präzise, mit seidig strukturierten Tanninen, ausgewogener Säure und bemerkenswerter Länge.
Mit 15 % Alkohol und einem pH-Wert von 3,67 besitzt der Wein ein strukturiertes, Profil, das für eine lange Reifung geschaffen ist.
Am Weingut wird ausschließlich nach Struktur und nicht nach Aromen kuvetiert.
Internationaler Anspruch
Der L12 ist Teil einer ambitionierten Qualitätsstrategie des Château Longyu.
Gemeinsam mit „Purple Air Comes from the East“ bildet er die qualitative Speerspitze des Hauses, das in Europa weiterhin unter dem Namen „Changyu Moser XV“ bekannt ist.
Gleichzeitig arbeitet das Team rund um Mr. Jiang Sun und Lenz Maria Moser an einem neuen Qualitätsprogramm mit dem Titel „Let the Berries Speak“.
Ziel ist es, die Eigenständigkeit des Terroirs von Ningxia noch klarer herauszuarbeiten und die stilistische Handschrift des Weins weiter zu präzisieren.
Limitierte Edition für Europa
Die Nachfrage nach dem L 12 ist auf dem chinesischen Heimmarkt enorm: rund 130.000 Flaschen werden dort jährlich produziert und verkauft.
Für Europa bleibt der Wein jedoch eine Rarität.
Die kommende Edition wird nur in einer streng limitierten Menge verfügbar sein.

That this ambition is more than just an ambitious vision becomes clear time and again in blind tastings.In 2021, the L12 was included in a high-profile tasting panel organized by the international trade magazine The Drinks Business.
Alongside wines such as Château Lafite Rothschild 2021, Penfolds Grange 2020, and Opus One 2021. The result attracted considerable attention: the wine received the same score as Château Lafite Rothschild – a remarkable signal for the international wine scene. “The L12 is the star of every blind tasting,” says Lenz Maria Moser, who has been acting as a bridge between China and Europe for two decades and has played a key role in the development of the project.
“Many tasters expect a classic Bordeaux – and are surprised when they discover that the wine actually comes from Ningxia.” Heinz Velich, one of Austria’s most renowned winemakers, was equally impressed after a blind tasting:
“This wine proves that China is already as good as the very top of the world.”
Stefan Neumann, Master Sommelier based in London and with more than 15 years of experience working with some of the most prestigious restaurants and hotels, is also convinced by the L12:
“Refined and precise, with great elegance and an impressive demonstration of how seriously Ningxia can produce great red wines. A wine that unquestionably deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the best red wines in the world.”
Small in numbers: while “normal” berries weigh about 1.6 grams, those in Ningxia weigh no more than one gram. But they deliver full power.
“The berries are extremely small and concentrated – they produce enormous density and at the same time remarkable elegance,” says Moser.
On the palate, the wine is both powerful and precise, with silky-structured tannins, balanced acidity, and remarkable length.
With 15% alcohol and a pH value of 3.67, the wine possesses a structured profile built for long aging. At the estate, blending is done according to structure rather than aromas.

New terroir of great red wines
L12 is produced at Château Longyu Estate in the Ningxia wine region, at the foot of the Helan Mountains at around 1,100 meters above sea level.
The dry desert climate, large temperature differences between day and night, and sparse soils composed of silt, sand, clay, and river gravel create particularly small, highly concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon berries.
“The berries are extremely small and concentrated – they produce enormous density and at the same time remarkable elegance,” says Moser.
The blend consists of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Marselan.
The grapes are hand-harvested in small 20-kilogram boxes and vinified after temperature-controlled fermentation at 25–30°C.
The wine then matures for 24 months in new French barriques, giving it depth, structure, and significant aging potential.
A style that surprises
In the glass, L12 presents itself in deep ruby red with violet reflections. The bouquet is layered and complex: cassis, cherries, plums, and raspberries combine with mocha, spices, tobacco, vanilla, and fine cedar. On the palate, the wine is both powerful and precise, with silky-structured tannins, balanced acidity, and remarkable length.
International Ambition
L12 is part of the ambitious quality strategy of Château Longyu. Together with Purple Air Comes from the East, it forms the qualitative spearhead of the estate, which in Europe continues to be known under the name Changyu Moser XV.At the same time, the team around Mr. Jiang Sun and Lenz Maria Moser is working on a new quality program titled “Let the Berries Speak.” The goal is to further highlight the individuality of Ningxia’s terroir and refine the stylistic signature of the wines – with fruit and elegance as the guiding mantra.
Limited Edition for Europe
Demand for L12 on the Chinese domestic market is enormous: around 130,000 bottles are produced and sold each year. For Europe, however, the wine remains a rarity.The upcoming edition will be available only in strictly limited quantities.
